Gems
Gems are used to enhance equipments by providing extra bonuses once inserted in an item's socket. Gems are classified as "Jewels" in game but the community is used to calling them gems.

Sources
Gems can be obtained in two different ways:
- As a drop from monsters: Gems became drops as of Update ver. 144 mainly from Bosses, Candle Ghosts and a few other key monsters. However, since the ver. 160 server update, any monster now has a very small chance of dropping any type of gems although such gems will never have a grade higher than 3.
- By crafting them: Artisans may craft gems (up to grade 7) using the Gem Cutting skill.
Making Gems
To craft or refine gems, chemicals is one of the main ingredient needed. The other ingredients can vary from Crystals to Hearts and lower gem grades.

Success rates
This subject has always brought controversial debates within the ROSE community since gems are probably the most demanded resources on the market due to their unique and beneficial attributes. The last major change to the gems cutting success rates was made in the ver. 160 Crafting update. Chemicals now all have different qualities (by increasing steps of 1) and any of them can be used to craft any gem grade as opposed to the previous system where each grade needed its own specific chemical as a crafting ingredient. Of course, the higher quality chemicals have, the higher the success rates will be.
From the tests made on Pegasus (Test server) as a preparation for the update, it seemed that cutting gems would now be slightly easier although the newly released Hermes chemical, which has the highest quality and was also released on ver. 160, would be rare at first and highly demanded.

Market fluctuations
The Gems market is one of the most closely followed. Since Gems have been introduced as drops from monsters in the ver. 144 update in January 2008, their prices have steadily decreased over time. With the ver. 160 update, prices have fallen even faster due to Low Essences not being required to make first grade gems anymore: any chemical can be used to craft any grade. Prices differences between chemicals being now more spread out and balanced, the production of gems in general has increased. Also with the ver. 160 update, Diamonds, Peridots and Emeralds which were drop-only items before can now be crafted. This fact greatly affected their previously high and unstable values which are now slowly falling down as well.
In the side graph, grade 1 gems are represented for the year 2008 up to the crafting update where new gems were introduced. The values are approximations done on a brief empirical study of their related prices for the corresponding month. The study included reviewing buying, selling and price check advertisements on the forum as well as past references from in-game player shops.
As mentioned previously, Diamonds, Peridots and Emeralds, being drop-only gems, have had really unstable prices and representing them couldn't have been done accurately without a certain degree of speculation. Therefore, they were not showed in the graph.
With the introduction of the new gems, we can expect prices to be going different paths from now on for most of them. However, now that they can all be crafted (including Diamonds, Peridots and Emeralds), we can foresee more stable and less fluctuating prices in the future.
Usage
To compound a gem to a weapon, body armor or jewelery, the player first needs to drill that item. Once a socket was made and the item re-equipped, drag-and-dropping the gem onto the equipped item will automatically attempt to gem it. The gemming success rate is currently of 100% (adding a gem to a socketed item will never fail).
